recorded forever...

"Time will never stand still and those moments that bring us such joy become memories in an instant. To capture such a moment and record it forever is truly monumental." - Joshua Atticks - Taken from Lifesessions.com

I don’t think there’s a better way to express it… especially when those moments of joy involve our children. They change before our eyes in such subtle ways every single day. Since we see them constantly, we hardly notice until we look back at a photo from a year ago, or a few months, or even a few weeks.

This was my experience when I was recently organizing and making back-ups of all of Laura’s photos. She has thousands… actually TENS of THOUSANDS! Our children and nieces and nephews are the subjects of many, being the most available models. When Laura wants to try something new, like that really cool portrait lens or a new place she’s found while looking for interesting photo-session venues, the kids are usually willing test subjects. While working on this project I found, in all those computer files, a recent history of the changes that have occurred with many of the children in our lives. Those “just beyond new-born” photos of Ben, then more of him just a few weeks later. Hardly looked like the same child. In another folder… Ben at three months… and Ben at six months… the little guy’s just over a year old now and I can’t believe the changes that have taken place. One might say, “He’s a baby, of course he’s going to change quickly.” But then I came across the photos of the ten year old, the teenagers, and the twenty-three year old who was just married in September. Unbelievable… Each of our children has changed so much in the last year.

It’s a blessing to me that Laura can’t go anywhere without her camera, and the batteries are always charged and ready to go. Those looks and expressions, the serious and comical acts that can never be recreated. Morgan will never again look the way she did playing her guitar that one summer day in 2009. That day at the beach with Cody and Logan surfing is a day full of images that are gone forever. Well, not really gone… Laura was there with her camera, doing something truly monumental – capturing and recording those moments forever.

We wish you all a Happy New Year, full of joyful images that can never be replaced… and need to be recorded forever.
