Portrait tips...

Arrive on time - it helps to not start off in a rush!

In that same spirit, allow enough time for your whole session - don’t hurry through it!

Make this about YOU …

Bring music you like to listen too

Are you a chronic reader? Bring your favorite book! Play an instrument? If it’s not a set of drums, bring it along! (If it IS drums, we’ll come to you!) Are you an artist? Bring some of your favorite art pieces or supplies! Involved in athletics? Bring your uniform or favorite equipment.Have your own car? Bring that - make sure it’s clean, of course! How about your pet? Want them in the picture? We‘ll come to you if you can‘t bring them! What are your hobbies? Think about them & tell us so we can help you feel AT HOME and RELAXED in your portraits. We want to capture YOU, not who we think you are!

Style - Clothing, Face & Hair

1. Solids & small prints work best - no distractions! Bright polka dots & flowers … not so much!

2. An obvious one … Make sure your clothes are clean, not stained & not wrinkled! (If you want, bring clothes with you and dress at your session to reduce wrinkles.)

3. Bring a few outfits … there’s no limit anyway & you never know which one will turn out best! Best combo - one “dressy” outfit Moms & Grandmas like to see you in & 2 casual - you know, the ones the rest of the world would recognize you in!

4. The Formal look? Warm, rich colors. Casual or romantic look? Light, airy colors look great!

5. No matter your arm size, long-sleeved shirts are best.

6. If you have a short neck and/or fuller face, wear v-necks or scoop neck shirts. If you have a long neck or face, try turtlenecks or high collars.

7. Jewelry? LESS IS MORE. If you have a class ring, that’s one to wear or bring along!

8. Make sure you pay attention to your ENTIRE OUTFIT(S) … nice outfit + grungy shoes = confused portraits! (Unless of course we’re going for the grungy look, but then don’t wear a nice outfit, right?)

9. If you get a new haircut before pictures, let’s schedule your session so it can grow out a bit (give it a week or so!) … no one likes it when their hair looks too short!

10. Make sure your hands are clean … they are important in your pictures.

11. Make-up … another LESS IS MORE!

Don’t cake on make-up - it hides people’s true beauty and can make you look too “done up”, especially if you want casual pictures! Not to mention, if it’s warm outside, it can make sweat worse! Just go with your typical & bring your necessities for touch-ups … especially powder!

12. NO SUNBURN! If you get sunburned (which you shouldn’t, trust me!), call me & let’s reschedule. We want the REAL YOU … not a crispy, PAINFUL,  “OOPS” reminder!

13. Bring your cap & gown, if you have it?

14. Have a favorite jacket or hat you always wear? Bring it!

15. Last bit of advice … these are portraits that will be around a LONG TIME. They represent everything from the last photo some folks will have of you, searching through a yearbook for decades to a nostalgic portrait hanging on your parent’s or grandparent’s wall to a thumbtack corkboard reminder of you in a friend’s collage hanging in their dorm…

Don’t compromise yourself. Let’s take the pictures YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED BY, doing what’s NATURAL TO YOU. Have fun - wear a new outfit, do a few “dreamy” poses … but make sure you have pictures of the person everyone knows & the one you’ll be proud to look back on.
